Hi Guys, In our previous blog we took a little bit of a different tact and talked about how the Warehouse Management module can actually make a retailer money using retail chargeback. So far in this series, we’ve talked about how unique requirements or unusual requirements that are in the base D365 FO Warehouse Management module can add value to a retailer. But there’s lots of things that are fairly common but not everybody has implemented them. And so we wanted to highlight these sort of features which D365 FO supports, and most Retail Warehouses do today, but then you may encounter some that don’t.

For example, these are the things, that really make a difference in the operating costs of those sites.

Case-level ASN receiving

First is the ability to get case-level advanced shipment notices from your vendor so that when the product shows up, all you have to do is scan that license plate that’s on that carton to receive it. You don’t have to enter in the PO or the SKU or the quantity. You don’t have to scan an additional license plate. All you have to do is scan that one license plate and that’s it and the box is received.

Forward vs Reserve picking

Another one that comes up more with very young retailers, is that they don’t separate their reserve stock from their forward pick area. In other words, everything is picked from reserve. And it usually means somebody has to drive around in the back, going up and down the air to pick things. And if you can convince them to set up a forward pick area and do replenishment, usually you can save a good bit of labor because the travel distance that’s associated with pick path becomes so much shorter, it usually pays for the added step of replenishing the Pick Face. So that’s also obviously supported by D365 FO right out of the box.

Replenishing license place quantities instead of eaches

Another thing that’s suggested right out of the box is if they don’t have the ability to support nonstandard case packs and using license plates to capture the quantity of each box. That probably means when they do replenishment, if they do have forward pick areas, they’re sending a guy in the back to actually open a box and count pieces out of it to perform the replenishment. This obviously is a super labor intense way of performing replenishment, and if you have a product like D365 FO that supports standard license plates, then this can just be nothing but a simple scan. D365 FO will round up to the nearest license plate quantity that you need based on the replenishment quantity and replenishment operator just scans a box and takes it on back. It’s that simple.

Cluster picking vs picking one order at a time

Cluster picking, if again they’re a very young organization, they may be picking just one order at a time. If that’s the case, cluster picking holds huge benefits right out of the gate. They’ll double their productivity, likely, by implementing cluster picking compared to picking one order at a time.

Picking multi’s separate from singles

And then even if they are picking multiple orders at a time, they may not distinguish between multis and singles, and there can be some real improvement in pick tour length and reduce walking significantly just by having two different kinds of carts. One that supports multi-line orders and one that supports single. And the single line order cart can obviously put lots more orders per cart than you will on the multis. So that can reduce labor very significantly. And that’s, again it’s supported straight out of the box.

Picking into the shipping carton

Finally, for those people that want to eliminate packing and have the confidence in their pickers to pick correctly using mobile device terminals, then why not just pick into the shipping cart. This is something that’s supported by D365 FO also right out of the box, and you can see the obvious benefits that go along with doing that. You can cut out one step of the process and most of the labor associated with that step of the process. That’s packing, if you are willing to do that.

So all of these things are more or less kind of common warehouse management features, but they are all supported in D365 FO but not everybody may have already implemented them. So you may find that a few of your prospects or customers may not know about these. So it’s worth kind of highlighting them, I believe, when you get into other sales situations or into an implementation discussion with the prospect or customer.

Summary of the Series

This is it for this Series. The value D365 FO Warehouse Management delivers to retailers should be a lot clearer now. We have shown you how out of the box D365 FO Warehouse Management can be used to save retailers money in a variety of ways; for example, the wave-based replenishment combined with dynamic forward pick locations. This is not a functionality that’s common today. More importantly, however, it should be evident how you as a partner can really leverage the product with a little work to add a tremendous amount of additional benefit to a Retail Warehouse. By building on the base capabilities of the product in several areas, we can save labor and picking with better pick clusters. We can save time in many areas through the use of customized mobile terminal interfaces, and we can save money in lots of other areas by implementing labor standards.

We also showed in this series how, through a series of a small customizations, we can help a retailer actually make money in their warehouse through the use of retail chargebacks. I really hope at the conclusion of this series you now feel more confident speaking to new D365 FO prospects or customers about how this product can really raise a Retail Warehouse up to the next level of performance and deliver tangible, significant savings to prospects and customers in the retail vertical.
