Dynamics AX: What version of SQL Server for a new install?

Lets talk about now, which version of SQL Server a new install should be implementing with. Flat out answer, for now, is SQL Server x64 standard edition. Why? Here is a few reason why this is the answer, for Most implementations today:

- The amount of allocated RAM for 32-bit version is only 4 GB max for a given instance, any other RAM can only be used for Data

- Lower TCO because the 64-bit Version can user up to 32 GB of RAM in Standard Edt.

So basically for a little more money than 32-bit Standard Edt, a given new implementation can get the same amount of RAM use as 32-bit Enterprise Edt. for standard cost when using x64 bit Standard edt. If you must use Enterprise Edt. for advanced clustering, online index creation, etc. then go with the 64 bit version, as this can use up to 1 Terabyte of RAM.

Now all implementations are different, maybe hardware will not allow for x64. However if this is a totally new implementation, and new hardware is being bought, then x64 is for sure the route to take from this point forward. What you get out of the RAM and processing is now worth the effort, which is not much anymore, to have your SQL Server system running on x64.

Check back later as I will continue to post about SQL Server performance and Dynamics AX. One thing to point out here is that AWE, like in the post before, is Not required and has no need to be used in x64.

Мне нравится постановка вопроса: какую версию MS SQL Server вам использовать с новой установкой DAX... С другой стороны, неудивительно: человек сдал экзамен по SQL 2005, ничего другого знать не хочет...
Не меньше порадовала фраза «The amount of allocated RAM for 32-bit version is only 4 GB max for a given instance». ОС при этом, видимо, должна забиться куда-нить в бут-сектор, чтобы отдать свой кровный гиг (а то и два) адресного пространства...
